Faithful to the book
5 March 2023
This was a stylish and well-thought through production, very faithful to the book, but maybe a little too long. The imaginative staging, with the 'children' now grown looking back at the events of that fateful summer and the very slick and intelligent changes of scenery, kept the production moving along at a good pace. Matthew Modine was brilliant if I had to pick out one performance, he really held the stage throughout and was a very believable Atticus Finch. Overall a very fine realisation for the stage of a unique novel, well worth seeing.

Barmaid
16 February 2023
I was so impressed by the young barmaid in the bar as you walk in the theatre. I accidentally ordered a Sprite instead of a soda. She had to get a manager to do a refund. There was a queue of people of people with two minutes to the start of the play. Potentially a stressful situation! She we as so calm, kind and personable. Made my evening (young girl with glasses).

I was utterly blown away by this play. It was so cleverly done and the acting was so powerful. It really made an impact on me - and the whole audience were on their feet at the end. Special mention for Scout and Atticus, who were superb.

To Kill A Mockingbird
9 February 2023
Great performance, totally absorbing. Loved the way the scenery just moved with the story. I had read the book many years ago but was surprised how much had forgotten, however didn't detract in any way from a moving and challenging story. Excellent.

An important reminder
9 February 2023
We have so far to go in reintroducing empathy in our society. Ostracizing difference, immigrants, ethnic minorities, trans etc by glamourising the idea of being 'anti-woke' is a dreadful indictment of our society. The issue is class. Those oppressed in this story have more in common than they are allowed to think, just by credit of their humanity. Sadly, this has not changed enough! We have regressed. Sorkin's "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a brilliant reworking giving voice to the black experience through Cal's withering sarcasm and sadness. The acting, especially Scout (Anna Munden) and Jem (Sam Mitchell) creates pace and humour and shock. Dil (Ellis Howard) was just brilliant, funny and sadly disturbing at the same time. At the centre was Modine's strong performance as a flawed and fearful Atticus Finch. If the court scenes were a little "clumpy" with his anger not as convincing as hoped, it is not surprising. The emotional range required as the tension rises must be incredibly difficult for any actor. The set was superb!

5 star review!
5 February 2023
Read the book twice, seen the Oscar winning film numerous times so this had a lot to live up to. Wow it certainly did, the whole cast were superb. Stage management was flawless. Capturing the essence of the book which still is poignant today.

To Kill a Mockingbird
3 February 2023
I had wondered how the writers would tie in the subject plots alongside the trial and they executed it brilliantly. The acting was sublime, characterisations perfext.
Only thing not to give it 5 stars were the accents. Sometimes hard to understand what was being said and a little inconsistent.

Great Performance
2 February 2023
Never fully understood the film or the book To Kill a Mocking Bird when I was young, but now living in a world wher diversity and inclusion is as important as ever, these theatrical show touched my heart as I recall some of the difficulties we faced coming to the UK from Asia /Africa some 50 years ago to UK. But here all the actors performed really well, good dialogues, as well as non sensitive jokes, made this performance worth our while watching. Only drawback was it lacked the ambience sound / music to accompany the dramatic performances of happiness and sadness. Music is such an important part in our lives.

What a wonderful way to spend and afternoon
29 January 2023
My daughter really wanted to see this play. I did not mind but was not as eager as she was. We both enjoyed every minute. I had not expected the humour with such a story but it was relevant to the story and made the whole thing a delightful way to spend an afternoon.

Great production
26 January 2023
Only criticism of the play was it left out the lines "Boo was our neighbour, he gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a pair of good luck pennies and our lives" these are very important to my mind but otherwise it was fantastic

Absolutely Fantastic
20 January 2023
The actors, musicians and scenery were all absolutely fabulous. I recently re-read the book so it would be fresh in my mind, and all the important and relevant bits were included. The humour injected throughout was a light relief to the serious topic. You know it's a fabulous show when you walk out and know you could easily watch it all over again. Massive well done.

19 January 2023
Thoroughly enjoyed the play; set changes were slick, actors put their all into it and major themes (racism, justice) were addressed with aplomb. Thought one or two American accents were a bit variable, but overall a fantastic effort all round.

Magnificent production
12 January 2023
What a great evening. A very strong cast conveyed all the nuances of prejudice and struggle from the 1930s deep south and clever set design provided the perfect backdrop. Although it's a long time since I read the book, this production conveyed everything that I have always loved about it.

Dill was fantastic
11 January 2023
I loved the way the plot was kept moving forward by the narration of the junior characters. They played such an important part in the book and I think Sorkin got this just right in the play. Scout, Jem and Dill were really well cast and particularly Dill was a show stopper - just like a young Capote should be. A loud Atticus took some getting used to, but it was a valid way of seeing him.

6 January 2023
What a fresh and enjoyable production of 'To Kill a Mockingbird'! Wonderful acting, great set, and accessible script. Nearly three hours long, yet never dragged for a moment. The story was familiar, yet its characters were given contemporary personalities which made the tale even more relevant to today. A great evening!

To Kill a Mockingbird
28 December 2022
Performance excellent, scenery, props, atmosphere amazing. Enabling as always through the narrative, an enabling of dealing with bias, prejudice, hatred and how the legal system works (informs even in todays legal system) views all good regardless of angles. My son is tall so seats a little uncomfortable, but that's the design nature of the magnificent theatre and the experience. Very impressed with customer service. Perhaps a bigger screen to watch the play for those of us that were late. Overall experience, exactly what I wanted for my son: design, live acting, ability through props and theatre mechanics to go from outside, to courtroom, to bedrooms to flashbacks to memory scenes - wonderful

Conventional retelling of a great and moving story
20 December 2022
I was so looking forward to see this well reviewed play.
If you have read the book by Harper Lee and seen the movie you will find no new insights with the play version of mockingbird.
The actors were professional . The staging conventional , nothing unique or inspiring to be found .
Very disappointed.
So much more could be had with creativity ,imagination and a bit more experimental thinking.
